Geeky Gatherings

[Oops. I'm still getting used to maintaining two blogs. I wrote this item for the technology site, then posted it here through force of habit. I've now copied it over there. But I'll leave it here too.]

Sam Ruby tells about a spontaneous gathering in a restaurant at last week's ETech conference. Seated around a big table with laptops, food and conversation. He says this kind of thing will become the norm in the future. I agree.

Wait a minute.. does a redirect from your own site stillcount as traffic?

Hey, I'll take whatever I can get.

Hey, look at all the techno-geeks lunch!!

Okay, here's a thought...

The most accepted theory as to why zebras have stripes is so that they will throw off their prey. The lions get confused hunting them. When the zebras stick together, the lions can't see where one starts and the other ends.

My theory is that the techno-geeks will eventually rule the world. And not because of their brains and intellect, but rather because of their blandness.

When the lions try to take over the world, well, metaphorically speaking (or, literally: think "Planet of the Apes"), the artistic, creative types, intentionally standing out and looking beautiful, colorful and unique, will be easy targets for their prey.

The techno-geeks, on the other hand, blend in and look exactly alike. It's much harder for their prey to find them and hunt them down as they all seem to merge together, just like the zebras. Smart move! Techno-geeks will survive! Gloria Gaynor will be proud.

Snaps for the techno-geeks!

"And not because of [the techno-geeks'] brains and intellect, but rather because of their blandness. "

I would take exception to this, except I know that Jo Ann married one of these bland things.

Yes, well, opposites attract! ;-)

By the way, I wasn't knocking techno-geeks, silly boy. I did say "Snaps for the techno-geeks."

Besides, I plan on hiding behind you techno-geeks for survival.

"It's much harder for their prey to find them and hunt them down as they all seem to merge together,"

Kill them now. Before it's too late. Survival of the fittest, you know. A pre-emptory strike to eliminate all techno-geeks now would be appropriate, although it will bankrupt Frye's.

HA! That's funny, Sherm. (Well, maybe not to techno-geeks.) I was thinking that if the techno-geeks ruled the world there would be no more fashion shows, Fab Five, haircare products or dance clubs.

Hey, I noticed I wrote "prey" when it should read "predator"... oops!

And by the way, Jack, I just realized you called my husband a "bland thing"? What's up with that?! I would never say that about you or Rick. I just said "blandness" as in techno-geeks dress similar... just like zebras. They dress similar too, so to speak.

But there are varying degrees of techno-geekiness, and I know you both know etiquette, pop culture, social graces and how to use a razor, so you're not in the category that I was speaking of!

Oh, I kid the techno-geeks! I love 'em, really. And that tape on the glasses trick is hot, hot, hot.

Here's my quick anti-techno-geek test: if you get my Gloria Gaynor reference, you're redeemed. If not, look within. :-)

"I Will Survive"

Not if I change my stupid lock and make you leave your key.

Posted by: sherman on February 21, 2004 05:37 PM

"And by the way, Jack, I just realized you called my husband a "bland thing"? What's up with that?!"

Don't worry Jo Ann -- just call his spouse bland and then..oh, wait. That's right. Nevermind.

"...If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me"

Snaps for Rick and Sherman on the Gloria Gaynor connection!

Now I knew Rick could make the connection. And Sherman? Why, of course! Actually, I think it's implied with Sherman.

Toot toot.
Hey.
Beep beep.

That's right -- I like to work hard for the money, works hard for it honey, and I want to get absolutely soaking wet.

Posted by: Jo Ann on February 24, 2004 04:46 AM

Oh, I'm a little slow to respond to this one; it's going to be off the radar screen (i.e. front page).

She Works Hard for the Money by Donna Summer.

But is it really a "hey"? Or, is it a "aahHH"?

Toot toot
AahHH
Beep beep

Toot toot
Hey
Beep beep

Hmm... I don't know, I can hear it workin' both ways. The sound in between the toots and the beeps definitely goes up at the end. That Donna Summer is quite deep, I must say. :-)
