Obama now.

Back in the beginning of this (incredibly long) campaign, I stated that I liked Senator Clinton over Senator Obama. I've been pretty silent in this blog, so I haven't had the opportunity to say that I've switched, and I now think Obama is the right choice....

Crazy Fan

Posted by Etc. guest blogger Sherman Yankee fans are crazy. People who live in New Hampshire are crazy. Add the two together and you get deadly crazy. A 43 year old mother and Yankees fan used her car to kill a 29 year old Red Sox fan who was taunting her with chants of "YANKEES SUCK" after seeing a Yankees sticker on her car. Ivonne Hernandez, who lives in Nashua, got angry at Matthew Beaudoin and his friends for taunting her, so she pulled out of her parking spot and drove 200 feet at full acceleration at the group of taunters. Hernandez told police she just wanted to scare them and thought the group would get out of the way of her car. Hernandez admitted to drinking a little prior to the incident. Prosecutors charged her with aggravated drunken driving along with second-degree murder. Beaudoin and his friends spotted the Yankees bumper sticker on the car and taunted Hernandez when she showed up from whatever bar she had been drinking in. At first, Hernandez and a 21 female friend of Beaudoin got into a tussle and fists were thrown. Hernandez then got into her car and drove it directly into...

Criminal Trial Blogs

Posted by Etc. guest blogger Sherman Something new is happening in Bay Area news circles: blogging criminal trials. Now, in addition to reporting a daily story on an interesting (read: juicy) criminal trial, the reporters are now doing a full out total transcript blog as well. I got hooked into following the Hans Reiser trials. You techno folks might recognize him since he’s the founder of the Namesys computer company and the designer of some file system software for Linux-based systems. Hans got himself a Russian mail order bride and has been accused of killing her even though her body was never found, no murder weapon was ever found, and only the smallest amount of blood was discovered. The prosecution’s case was built totally on circumstantial evidence – that in itself made it juicy, but it really got good when Hans got on the stand. This guy is so into himself. He kept arguing with the prosecutor, the judge, his own lawyer, and eventually the frustrated judge said: "You are rude. You are arrogant. There's not enough words in the English language to describe the way you are. You have been trying to make a mockery of these proceedings." And...

The Amazing Tongue

Jo Ann the Opera Lady provided us with the following anatomy lesson: Someone needs to post here... I am sick of popping in here and seeing the word "camel". That's just wrong. :-) Okay, I think I should bring this up now... especially since no one posted on 4/20. Okay, so the next time you're eating think about how amazing it is that your tongue can generally get out of the way when you're eating! If you think about it, it is kinda trippy that, most of the time, we don't bite our tongue. It takes up most of the space in our mouths, and yet, it is able to get out of the way of our teeth when we are chomping on food! How amazing! Yah, okay, one mouth! Grammar is difficult in this section--ya gotta just go for it! So, try to think about your tongue next time you're eating and it will kinda trip you out (or make you bite your tongue). By the way, I am talking literally, not figuratively. :-)...

The Leningrad Cowboys with special guests the Red Army Choir

You see some pretty odd things on the internet, but this has to be near the top of the list. Here's the post where I found this (by way of my podcast co-host Dave), with a bit of explanation. ...consider the Finnish rock band called The Leningrad Cowboys. A little while ago, they held a concert in Russia, in which - to the screaming applause of Russkie teen-agers - they got the Red Army Choir to join them on stage for a performance of "Sweet Home Alabama." In English. You couldn't make this up....

Obama's speech on race

Pretty interesting speech today. Has me thinking. I found the video to it on the msnbc.com site. But it's not easily linkable, so you'll have to go looking for it. (How foolish of you msnbc!) (BTW, it's a shame that such an important speech had such poor video, and particularly audio, coverage. I wonder who was doing it?)...

Mind War

Depending how accurate this piece is, the Bush Administration may have at least some good ideas. The International Herald Tribune: A primary focus has become cyberspace, which is the global haven of terrorist networks. To counter efforts by terrorists to plot attacks, raise money and recruit new members on the Internet, the government has mounted a secret campaign to plant bogus e-mail messages and Web site postings, with the intent to sow confusion, dissent and distrust among militant organizations, officials confirm. I've always thought that one way to deter these things is not to vilify the suicide bombers, but show sympathy for them. They are pitiful individuals who have been duped into sacrificing their eternal souls to advance the deceitful goals of others. So sad....
