Contemplating the radish

Ed Cossette:

It's no wonder that in Dickson's Baseball Dictionary the term radish is defined as "the baseball." I haven't heard this myself, but my guess is it harkens back to an earlier time, a time before supermarkets featuring produce that never is out of season, a time when the radish wasn't an afterthought, wasn't just another something to consume, but was the first crop out of the garden and the first fresh item at the local market after a long, hard winter of canned foods and salty meats. Like baseball, the radish each season would arrive just when you needed it most, just when you can't bear to see another flake of snow.
