If the season were a nine-inning game.

While watching last night's Redsox game, trying to put an ok spin on this disturbing losing streak, I came up with a new way (new to me anyway) of looking at the progress of the season. Instead of seeing it by month, or by "10% through the season now", or by before/after the All-Star break, instead how about using units that we're already very familiar with: innings.

It turns out that the 162 game season divides neatly into 9 18-game innings. We just finished game 25, so we're in the middle of the second inning -- still pretty early in the game.

We had a strong first inning, we're struggling in the beginning of the second, but it's still early in the game.

(BTW, my scoreboard graphic might be a clever hack, or it might be a graphical disaster. If it looks weird on your browser please leave a comment telling me so, and which OS & browser you're using. Thanks.)
