Eubie Blake

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.

If I had taken better care of myself, I wouldn't have enjoyed living this long.

Sherm, Have you been saving that one to use now or did it really just pop into your head?

Either way, I had to pick myself up off the floor.

At least now I know what I'm doing wrong...

It's an old philosophy of mine. As they keep adding things to the list of what you shouldn't do, it just becomes clear that the only way to live long is to live boring -- I'll take short and fun. I blame this disregard for my health on Jack, who dragged me to see Cabaret at an impressionable age and exposed me to the wisdom of Elsie from Chelsea.

What good is sitting alone in your room?

"Come hear the music play!" Yeah, Elsie! "Start by admitting from cradle to tomb, it isn't that long a stay. Life is a Cabaret, old chum..."

It's true... that's exactly what they said about Sammy Davis, Jr. too! He may have shortened his life with the hard living, oh, but what a life he lived!

So, Jack dragged you to see Cabaret at an impressionable age? There's something ironic about that, don't ya think?!! :-0

Opera Lady -- you got it wrong. It wasn't hard living that shortened his life -- it was white girls.

Hard living shortened his height -- he was 6'3" when he started doing standup -- a former basketball player at UNLV. He lost his eye in a tragic accident involving a broken basketball hoop and some chocolate pudding someone had left on the court.
