Lee Iacocca, of all people

In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have.

Double Header today

Just for the record. As of today the Yankees are 10 games out of first, and just a half game out of last place.

You don't want to do that

Yesterday afternoon I suffered that computer-user right-of-passage: My primary hard disk died.

No warning, the apps just froze up, and when I rebooted, I got what I now know to be the unambiguous, flashing-question-mark icon. When I described this to the Apple Store support guy, he immediately said, you have a recent backup right?

Umm no. No really recent backup. I mean hey, it's only a 6 month old drive.

OK, my bad.

There's a gnawing ache in my gut when I think about some of the things on that drive, but it's slowly going away.

The good news is that the machine is still under warranty, so Apple will replace the drive, no charge. But before I take them up on this I'm exploring data recovery options.

So, do like I say, not like I do. Make regular backups. I'm gonna start now.

Another day, another example

Bush White House staffers attempted to take advantage of the critically ill Ashcroft.

When by comparison even Ashcroft looks like a good guy... !!!

NYT story:

“And Attorney General Ashcroft then stunned me,” Mr. Comey went on: He raised his head from the pillow, reiterated his objections to the program, then lay back down, pointing to Mr. Comey as the attorney general during his illness.

Pictured: Former White House staffer, and current Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales.

Don't try this at home.

Be patient, it doesn't really get started 'til about 35 seconds in.

Here comes the Rocket

Boston sports radio is all a-buzz this morning about Roger Clemens' decision to play for the Yankees.

Aside from the steady "we didn't want him anyways" whining, one big topic is a "make my day" sort of excitement about the possibility that Clemens will begin his 2007 season during the series on June 1-3 when the Yankees come back to Fenway.

POTUS looks old in this pic.

Is it me, or does the President look terrible in this pic? Is he sick? Or could this be a ploy to gain sympathy: "Fighting America's enemies is making the President old before his time. Don't make it worse by questioning him."
